Coaching for Confidence

How might a systemic coach coach for confidence?

Working as a systemic coach means being open to the messages originating in the multiple dynamic relationship systems that people belong in, so if people in a team or group express a desire to work on confidence then we could take a situational perspective and work on fixes but we might be more in service if we step back and surface the entanglements inherent in the systems at play.

These days the world is changing apace, and as such the bubbles that we have worked and lived in for a period are growing, evolving, or maybe popping painfully. Living in our bubbles we knew the rules, we knew our place or identity, and we knew how to keep our belonging in our groups safe.

As the bubbles change so too do the unspoken rules of belonging that we need to navigate. We are invited or compelled to change the version of ourselves that shows up. Maybe we are invited to accept greater leadership responsibilities, maybe we are invited to learn new skills, or maybe we are forced to change our perspective of ourselves. All of these nudge us from the safe place of belonging into a growth zone, an area where the sand is shifting beneath our feet.

Change can happen to us instantly, the transition to make sense of these changes takes more time.

The beauty of the systemic work is that there are many paths we might take so building skills could still be useful, and it might also be of a longer term benefit to explore what feeling confident in this new space might mean for us. Maybe feeling confident in this new way might leave us feeling as if we are leaving our previous bubble of belonging where we felt nurtured, protected and happy for so long. Or maybe feeling confident with this new version of ourselves is asking us to agree to parts of us that we judge in others and have thus far hidden in our shadows. Working as a systemic coach invites us tune into the somatic connection in the coaching space and to explore and navigate paths to better with our clients, so even though there are as many paths to better as there ways to wander through the woods, by sensing and feeling our way through together we find new ways that feel true and useful as the fog clears and the path emerges.

In the systems of the body, the gut provides our drive and energy and also sets our boundaries; our heart creates connection and belonging; and our head is best placed to follow their lead executing and creating in the wake of the gut and the heart.

Navigating these systems of our lives takes a conscious slowing down, and connecting with the messages that we carry deep within us. It invites us to re-architect the boundaries and rules of belonging that we live by as we explore new ways of being.

And for this, the path forward starts with a step back. A step to notice, acknowledge, and to re-source ourselves so that we can step forward with a new emerging resourced relationship with confidence, authority, and clarity.
